The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler

A studio production directed by Hannah Conway

The Vagina Monologues has been heralded by The New York Times as one of the most important plays of the past 25 years. It’s a show that has rocked audiences all around the world – ground-breaking, poignant and hilarious all at once! Written in 1996 the play in an episodic one which explores consensual and non-consensual sexual experiences, body image, genital mutilation, direct and indirect encounters with reproduction, vaginal care, menstrual periods, and several other topics through the eyes of women with various ages, races, sexualities, and other differences.

Playwright, Eve Ensler, describes her show as a
“celebration of vaginas”, and the play has sparked worldwide awareness of violence towards women and girls, and even set in motion its own annual festival, “V Day” which still runs
worldwide today.

Audition criteria:
This will be an all-female identifying cast, as all monologues stem from interviews Eve made with women.

ANY AGE (18+) The bigger the range the better!

Actors auditioning, must be aware that we will be dealing with sensitive content, and all cast members will be made to feel comfortable in a safe working space. I’m looking for great comedy skills, and amazing authenticity – so a range of performance styles will be worked on throughout. American accents are a bonus, but not an essential.

I have attached two short monologues – these are not necessarily the ones we will use in the show, they are for your reference and to get a feel of the different types of monologues the play includes. These two monologues have been chosen to highlight the range of content in the monologues – and you are not expected to learn them!
