Set in East Berlin in 1984, the story traces the gradual disillusionment of Captain Gerd Weisler, an agent of the secret police, who is ordered to spy on a celebrated writer and actress. What starts off as a routine surveillance operation motivated by Cold War politics becomes something quite different.
